Windows XP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I delete the Hotfix file after updating?

Question:

Are Hotfix files necessary? I have quite a few of them on my hard drive and I could really use the space.

Answer:

Yes, you can delete them. I would wait a few days before deleting a current Hotfix just to be sure that your system remains stable. Once you delete a hotfix file, you can no longer uninstall the hotfix. Here's how to delete them:

  1. Go to Start>> My Computer
  2. Double click your hard drive where your Windows installation resides (usually C:\)
  3. Double click the WINDOWS folder
  4. The files in blue ($NTUninstallKBxxxxxx$) are the hotfix uninstall files.
  5. Right click a selected file and choose delete.
