Outlook Express Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I have lost all of my mail, how can I retrieve it?
There can be a couple of causes for this:

If you have background compacting selected and it was running when Windows was shut down improperly. You can check this by looking under Tools>> Options>> Maintenance.

The emails are stored in DBX files.  They can be extracted using a utility called DBXtract. The author requires $5.00 US before downloading this software. This utility can be downloaded here:

-OR-

DBXpress: [Recommended for large files]

An Anti-virus software (more often McAfee) can cause this. To avoid future problems, turn off email scan, auto update and Internet (ActiveX) filter.

Note: Create a read messages folder and move your email to this folder as it is read.  It is much safer than keeping your mail in the default folders.
